Last week was Greek Week on campus. Greek week is a week where the sororities and fraternities on campus come together and do multiple activities. There is an all Greek rush that takes place in the beginning of the week where everyone who is interested in Greek life and come and mingle with different houses to figure out which one fits them the best. At the all Greek rush each house had to present an activity. My sorority, Psi Sigma psi, decided we were going to dig for trivia.
Can you believe that this is my fourth year at Alfred State and this is the first homecoming weekend that I have attended. Well, I would have to say that this weekend was a huge success. I had such a good time that I wish that I would have stayed all my other years here. I am kind of upset about not winning a raffle basket, but you can't win them all huh? (Just kidding...)
Wednesday night was another one of Alfred State's "New Horizons Forum"s (http://www.alfredstate.edu/life-on-campus/new-horizons-forum). At this week's meeting Dr. Choichiro Yatani, ASC Psychology Professor, was invited to discuss his involvement in our country's governmental system. In 1986 Yatani was a student in this country here on a visa, and after returning from a trip, he was held without explanation for 44 days in a NYC federal prison.

So let me start off with introducing myself, I'm Anne and I am just starting my 3rd year, my 5th semester, here at Alfred State College. I am a liberal arts and social science major and I absolutely love it. I originally started here at Alfred as an Interior design major, although it is a great program, I decided it wasn't for me. I began the liberal arts program in order to take classes having to do with psychology. This is my last semester here at Alfred and I will be sad to leave.
This last week we had 3 students from last year's program return and volunteer with us. We got a lot of work done on the house and everyone had a great time. A prank war developed involving toilet paper, string-in-a-can, cellophane, and plastic rats. (see 1st photo). One of the returning students rented a paddle board and was out in the bay when he was visited by a pod of dolphins.
I know that this was awhile ago, but I just saw an announcement about it and thought that it would be something beneficial to talk about to show how much Alfred State College cares about the community.
Before I get started on telling you about my daily life I'll start by giving some basics about myself. I'm Jess Long (My real name is Jessica but I only get called that if I'm in trouble). I'm 20 years old and from Hamburg NY. It’s like 15 minutes south of Buffalo. I graduated from Frontier High School in 2009 and I'm a third year student in the Forensics program (I absolutely love everything about it).
After the recent flooding that occurred around the state, many students and organizations here at Alfred pulled together to help the victims of this disaster. Dorms have put together programs to raise funds for the victims, as well as gathered clothing and supplies. In my dorm, we have already started two events, one is a jar war to collect money and the other is a clothing and canned food drive. Later this week the RA's are putting on a "Pie your RA" program to raise more funds for the relief.
