Halloween Week Events

Submitted by finkdj on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 9:14pm

Well, fall has officially set in here at Alfred State (although today seemed more like winter), and it has come with all of the necessary events and traditions of the season.  The Dining Hall is serving cider, people are wearing scarves, and haunted houses have begun.  The next thing everyone is looking forward to is Halloween!

Submitted by guntheae on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 12:31pm

On October 16th (this past Sunday), Alfred State College had one of our fall open houses. At open house I helped give campus tours. Those who were attending open house got to take a campus tour, go on a department tour, see an presentation and they got to eat lunch at one of our dining options here on campus. During the campus tour the groups viewed two residence hall, one corridor style and one suite style.

Fall in Alfred

Submitted by guntheae on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 12:20pm

It's another beautiful fall season in Alfred! One things I love about the fall here is the hills. The hills are full of beautiful, colorful trees. From the residence halls here at Alfred you can view all of these colorful trees while you are studying or just hanging out in you room. It is also visible while sitting in the library doing homework. From the quiet study area there is an amazing view of the hills across from our campus. I don't have views like this in Boston, so being able to see it here is quite a privilege and is just one of the reasons I love being in Alfred.

Volunteering in New Orleans

Submitted by EllisNM on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 8:39pm

Today was one of those great teaching days.  I was supervising half the students at a work site in the ninth ward.  Every student was working at something he had never done before and they were all doing professional grade work.  Of course their speed was not up to pro standards, but they were all using their tools well, paying attention to details, and problem solving as they went.  The ceramic tile, floating flooring and the trim work all looked great.

Correction and Taste of Wellsville

Submitted by kernancm on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 4:28pm

Sorry about my blog last week.  I was a week ahead of myself, the open house is this Sunday.  I hope that there is a good turnout and I get to meet a lot of new people who are interested in the school.  I am really sad though because I will have to miss the Taste of Wellsville on Sunday because I will be giving tours at the open house.

Volunteering in New Orleans

Submitted by EllisNM on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 8:38pm

In the accompaning photo, you can see the most common house style in New Orleans - the Shotgun house.  The name supposedly comes from the ability to shoot a gun through the front door opening and have the bullet go completely through the length of the house, and out the open back door without hitting anything.  This style arose because the property tax was based upon the size of the front face of the house, resulting in long narrow one story houses.  Where a second story is present, it is on the back of the house where it wouldn't be taxed.

Marcellus Shale Lecture

Submitted by finkdj on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 11:09am

As promised earlier, I did attend another New Horizons Forum last night.  This one happened to be on a topic that I, and many other New Yorkers, have become very interested in lately: The Marcellus Shale Layer and its role in Hydrofracking.  If you aren't aware of what Hydrofracking is, here's a definition that I found:

Volunteering in New Orleans

Submitted by EllisNM on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 5:48pm

We've been volunteering in New Orleans for 10 days now. We have split into 2 work groups - one working with the Episcopal Service Organization and the other with Phoenix of New Orleans. The first group is installing siding, trim, windows, steps and subfloors. The second group is building all new interior walls, framing for new windows and doors, and replacing termite damaged components through out.

Well today marks the end of the of the first half of the semester.  Can you believe that?  It seems like this semester is just flying by.  Last week, I had 3 tests (2 in the same day). Talk about a busy week of studying.  They were returned this week and I did really well on all three!

Up 'til Dawn

Submitted by guntheae on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 4:30pm

Recently I have joined the club Up 'til Dawn. This student run club spreads awareness to childhood cancer. It is a national organization that is run by St. Judes Hospital. Last week we talked about our upcoming Halloween party that we are going to put on. We are going to have it the Sunday before Halloween and have various activities going on. I took on the position of Treasurer and Recruitment Chair because I do both of these for my sorority so I had a good idea of what needed to be done for those positions.
