Volunteering in Mississippi
We are back at work in the Habitat subdivision today and so I took the opportunity to take a couple of pictures of the houses we helped build last year which are now occupied.
These houses are about 1300 square feet, single story with no cellar or attic storage. They use fiber cement siding, foam in place insulation and are heated and cooled with air to air heat pumps. Although 1300 square feet sounds tiny, they have 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a laundry room and an open eat-in-kitchen design. They meet energy star requirements and are reportedly very easy to heat and cool. I like that our students are exposed to a more minimalist design process with great attention paid to energy efficiency.
