Hydrofracking Rally

Hydrofracking is a topic I've discussed in a precious blog, but it's a highly debated topic in New York State right now. Last Wednesday was the first of four rallies and public comment hearings to discuss the DEC's SGEIS document. It took place in Dansville, and several students from Alfred University's Green Alfred Club and I drove up to hear what others had to say about the topic.

The event took place from 1:00 in the afternoon until 9:00, with public comment sessions being held from 1:00-4:00 as well as 6:00-9:00. There were people on both sides of the debate present and ready to voice their opinions. There were people who believed it could create temporary jobs in NYS and people who believed it was not worth the risk to everyone's health. At the first session there seemed to be a decent amount of people in favor of fracking, while during the second session it was predominantly people against fracking.

People of all age groups were present, including other students from Geneseo College, who spoke on behalf of our generation. One thing seemed clear on both sides of the argument, though; People need to comment on the SGEIS document, because right now it doesn't cover certain areas that could cause problems for both groups.
