Born To Fight
Here at Alfred, Civic Engagement is huge! Getting involved in the community is something that a lot of students want to get involved in. Because of this, we are building a student leadership center where clubs and organizations will have "store fronts" to showcase what they are all about. There is going to be a rock climbing wall and a cafe as well. This building will be centered around civic engagement. Here you can make anything happen if you want it to. Recently a family member of mine has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Because I live seven hours away from them, I wanted to do something to help. With the help of my sorority and a club on campus called Up 'Til Dawn, we applied for a civic engagement grant to help us purchase bracelets to help pay for his treatment. We will be selling 1" bracelets in the dining hall every day starting Monday November 14th until the end of school. The bracelets will range in price from $1 to $3. When all the bracelets have sold we are hoping to cover or come close to covering the cost of his treatment. It was so easy for me to get this going, I had an idea, and Alfred decided to help me with making my idea into reality.
It's not just in civic engagement that students can make what they want to happen, it's even in the activities area. If there is a club that you want to see on campus.but we do not have it, if you have enough of a following you can get that club on campus. It's nice to know that this school cares about what we want and will help us make it happen.
