BASEBALL: 23-15-1

The baseball season came to end this week with two heartbreaking 9th inning losses at the Region III Division II Tournament.  On Tuesday, before Regionals started, the Blue and Gold split a doubleheader with Finger Lakes CC.

Finger Lakes CC 8 ASC 7 & ASC 15 Finger Lakes CC 1: ASC jumped out to a 1-0 lead before FLCC answered back with four runs keyed by Eason's two-run homer in bottom of the first.  The Pioneers scored the next six runs but the Lakers rallied for three in the fifth inning to tie the game before Eason led off the bottom of the seventh with his second homer of the game.

Kevin Underhill (Somers) was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI, Kelvin Espinosa (George Washington) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and two runs scored, and Bruno Saraceno (Binghamton) was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI to pace the offense.

The Pioneers used a 10-run fifth inning to take full control of the nightcap.  ASC had six players finish with multiple hits in the contest and 17 total hits.  Saraceno was 3 for 3, Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, and Espinosa was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI including a two-run homer.  Underhill was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) and Yordis Veras (Newtown) were each 2 for 4.   Jeff Miller (N. Tonawanda) pitched four solid innings to earn the victory on the mound.  He allowed one run on three hits while striking out four and walking just one.

Mercyhurst North East 4 ASC 3:   Alfred State got on the board in the 1st inning when Yordis Veras (Newtown) walked, stole second, advanced to third when the catcher's throw went to centerfield, and scored when the ball rolled passed the centerfielder.  Derek Speaker (Starpoint) made it 2-0 in the 4th inning when he singled home Bruno Saraceno (Binghamton) who had led the inning off with a single.  Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) drove in Kevin Underhill (Somers) with a fielders choice to make it 3-0 in the 5th.

Mercyhurst began its rally in the 8th when Benji Jarabeck doubled home Styles Carver.  In the 9th, Brent Macko drove home Karl Swanson on a ground out to make it 3-2 before the Saints drew two, two-out bases loaded walks to take the lead for good.

Underhill finished 2 for 4 while Speaker was 2 for 5 with an RBI as the Pioneers collected seven hits on the day.

Monroe CC 8 ASC 7:   Alfred led 7-6 heading into the 9th when Matt McGovern singled to lead off.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a throwing error.  With Jeff Osler on second, Pat Corrigan delivered a pinch hit game-winning single to end the game.

Alfred State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning keyed by a three-run Derek Speaker (Starpoint) homer.  Monroe then bounced back and scored the next six runs on three-run 3rd and 5th innings.  In the 6th, Kelvin Espinosa (George Washington) drove in Yordis Veras (Newtown) with a RBI ground out to cut the lead to 6-5.  ASC regained the lead in the 7th when Craig Kosnikowski (N. Tonawanda) and Bruno Saraceno (Binghamton) scored on an error.

Veras finished the day 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored while Speaker was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI including his first career homer.  In total, the Pioneers collected 10 hits.

LACROSSE: 8-6

The Pioneers season came to an end following a 17-9 loss to Hudson Valley CC in a 1st round Region III Tournament contest.

Hudson Valley CC 17 ASC 9: The Alfred State College lacrosse team started slow and never could recover.  Hudson Valley led 5-1 after the first quarter and led 7-1 at half en route to the victory.

Josh Mateo (Waterloo) had a hat trick to lead the Pioneers offense while Ben Rossignolo (Churchville) recorded three points with a goal and two assists.  Bill Jolly (Waterloo), Ryan Grogan (Churchville), and William Ardolino (William Floyd) each scored once and Mitch Wensel (Corning East) picked up an assist.  Deljae Edwards (Syracuse/Nottingham) made 15 saves in net for the Blue and Gold.

SOFTBALL: 10-28, 5-20 Region III Division III

The Lady Pioneers hung tough in their first six contests of the week but were unable to pick up a win until they closed out the season with a sweep of Alfred University JV.

Broome CC 10 ASC 3 & Broome CC 4 ASC 3:  Kathy McCarthy (Orchard Park) led the offense in the opener with a 2 for 3 performance.  Casey Downing (Cobleskill-Richmondville) was 1 for 3 with a two-RBI double while Caitlin Neill (Alfred Almond) was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a double.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers trailed 4-1 heading into the 7th inning.  ASC cut the lead to 4-3 and had the tying run on second base with two outs when the Hornets recorded the final out.  Shelly Flint (Alfred Almond) was 2 for 2 on the day while Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.  Bridgett Bachert (Horseheads) was 2 for 4 with a triple and a RBI.

Corning CC 11 ASC 0 & Corning CC 9 ASC 0: In the opener Megan Myers tossed a five inning no-hitter.  She allowed just two walks while striking out ten Lady Pioneers.  She got all the offense she needed in the 1st when Corning scored six runs. 

Corning scored four in the 2nd and three in the 3rd to take control of game two.  Nikole Poppleton allowed a hit and a walk while striking out eight batters to earn the win.  Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) had the lone Pioneer hit with a double in the 5th inning.

Herkimer CCC 11 ASC 4 & Herkimer CC 4 ASC 2: Bridget Bachert (Horseheads) had a solid day finished 4 for 6 with 2 runs scored while Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI in the nightcap.  In the nightcap, Becky Simpson (Campbell Savona) allowed two earned runs in six innings of work.

ASC 18 Alfred University JV 10 & ASC 10 Alfred University JV 1: In the opener, the Lady Pioneers scored 11 runs on nine hits in the 6th inning to erase a 10-7 deficit en route to the 18-10 win.  Melissa Gifford (Jamestown) was 4 for 4 while Holly Fitzpatrick (Hornell) was 4 for 5 with four runs scored and 2 RBI.  Kathy McCarthy (Orchard Park) was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI, Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, and Bridgett Bachert (Horseheads) was 2 for 4. Flint picked up the complete game victory as she allowed four earned runs in six innings of work.  She struck out four and walked two.

Shelly Flint (Alfred Almond) was 2 for 2 with three runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap to pace the Pioneers 11-hit attack.  ASC broke the game open with a five-run 3rd inning.  Gifford continued her hot hitting with a 2 for 3, 3 RBI contest and Becky Simpson (Campbell Savona) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.  Simpson also picked up the win on the mound allowing one earned run on four hits in five innings of work.  She struck out two and walked two.

TRACK & FIELD: Men 2nd & Women 5th at Regionals

The Pioneers had a strong showing as the hosted the Region III Championship over the weekend.  The men finished as Region III Runner-ups while the women finished 5th.  The team now shifts its focus the NJCAA Division III National Championships which begins on Thursday.

Men: The Pioneers went 1-2-3 in the men's pole vault.  Broncho Rollins (Ithaca) won with a vault of 4.38 m.  Alex Curran (Williamson) jumped 4.08 m. and Dan Reynolds (Wayland Cohocton) was 3rd with 3.63 m.

Keenan Hall (Monticello), Nathan Smith (Clymer), and Dan Fabiny won individual championships.  Hall won the discus (36.43 m), Smith won the hammer throw (43.30 m), and Fabiny won the javelin (44.47 m).

Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) was 2nd in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:03.28) and 5th in the 1500 (4:15.93).  Reynolds was 2nd in the high jump (1.78 m).  Hall finished 2nd in the shot put (11.73).   Andy Omoregie (Gates Chili) was 2nd in the long jump (6.84 m) and 3rd in the 110 hurdles (15.57).  Corey Smith (Wallkill) was 2nd in the 10,000 m (38:06.3).  Cedric Crowder (Gates Chili) was 3rd in the shot put (11.60 m) and 4th in the 110 hurdles (16.08).  Alvin Flemming (Eastridge was 3rd in the 100 (11.24).

Hector Cuero (Middletown) was 4th in the 800 (1:58.44), Dan Fabiny (Wellsville) was 5th in the 200 (22.88), 5th in the 100 (11.43), and 6th in the discus (33.62 m), and Ken Pixley (Bainbridge Guilford) was 6th in the 400 (52.30).

The 4 x 100 relay team of Flemming, Geoffrey Kobuszewski (Solvay), Justin Kopta (Clymer), and Fabiny finished 2nd in 43.40, the 4 x 400 relay team of Pixley, Brian Zintel (Letchworth), Kobuszewski, and Cuero finished 3rd (3:29.83), 4 x 800 relay team of Zintel, Williamson, Michael Kaplan (Tri-Valley), and Cuero ran an 8:11.1 to earn 3rd place.

Cobleskill won the men's competition for the first time since 1970 with 195.5 points.  ASC had 160 points followed by Delhi (147), Erie CC (64), Mohawk Valley CC (40), Finger Lakes CC (36), and Herkimer CCC (33.5).

Women: Najia McGee (Rochester/Edison) paced the women's team with two individual titles and helped bring home a relay title.  McGee won the 100 in 12.79 and the 200 in 26.20.  She was also part of the winning 4 x 100 relay team that won in 50.46.  Joining McGee in the relay was Reaghan Bulkley (Avoca), Caitlyn Peterson (Wayne), and Callie Ayers (Letchworth). 

Bulkley was the only other Lady Pioneer to win an individual title.  Shewon the long jump with a leap of 4.89 m

Ayers finished 2nd in the 800 (2:28.93) while Heather Sears (Letchworth) finished 2nd in the pole vault (2.35 m)

Rachel Shellman (Honeoye Falls Lima): 3rd in the 10,000 m (47:43.1) and Emily Fields (Red Creek): 3rd in the hammer throw (27.75 m), 3rd in the discus (27.06 m) and 6th in the shot put (8.32 m).  Peterson finished 4th in the 100 (13.50) and 5th in the 200 (27.61). 

Herkimer CCC won the women's team title with 163.5 points.  They were followed by Mohawk Valley (115), Cobleskill (108), Finger Lakes CC (101), ASC (92), Erie CC (66), and Delhi (30.5).
