Men's Basketball: 6-14, 1-6 WNYAC
The men's basketball team split a pair of WNYAC contests last week. They snapped an eight-game slide with a 78-68 victory over JCC-Olean but then lost another close one 62-55 at Jamestown CC.
Pat Parker (Queens/Hillcrest) led the Pioneers with 24 points (10 for 11 from the foul line) and 12 rebounds in the victory over JCC-Olean. Alex Hall (Jamaica/Forest Hills) chipped in 18 points and 11 rebounds, Rasheem Creech (Brooklyn/Transit Tech) had 13, and DaQuan Allen (Brooklyn/Boys & Girls) chipped in 12 points, seven assists, and five boards. Thomas Stein (Caledonia Mumford) had six.
On Thursday, the Jayhawks hit five 3-pointers in the 1st half as they held a 28-21 halftime lead. The Pioneers cut it to 28-27 and the teams traded baskets until JCC was able to expand the lead to 10, 45-35. Alfred had a couple opportunities in the next possessions but missed back to back front ends of 1 and 1's to allow the Jayhawks to keep the lead en route to the victory. Allen led the Pioneers with 11 points while Parker chipped in 10 points and six boards. Stein had 10 points and eight rebounds down in the post.
Women's Basketball: 10-8, 1-3 Region III Division II
The women's basketball team played another tight Region III Division II contest and fell 57-54 at Jamestown CC in their only action of the week.
Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) and Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) each finished with 12 points each. Witchella also grabbed 10 rebounds and registered five blocks. Amie Brooks (Pavilion) chipped in 11, Ardaisha Hudson (Brooklyn/Food & Finance) had 10, and Nuri Bey (Bronx/HS of Computers & Technology) had eight points.
Swimming: Men 5-1, Women 2-4
The swim team is busy preparing for the Region III/Northeast District Championships which will be held Feb. 17-19 at Monroe CC.
Indoor Track: Competed at Ithaca
The indoor track & field team had an impressive showing at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational. The Pioneers had numerous athletes finish in the top eight of the competition that featured nine schools.
Shawn Charles (Rochester/Greece Olympia) earned 2nd place finishes in two events. He was 2nd in the 60 m dash in 7.08 and 2nd in the 200 m in 23.12. The men's 4 x 200 relay also earned a 2nd place finish. The team of Brian Tubbs (Waverly), Rawle Crawford (Mt. Vernon), Jayvon Larkin (Rochester/Wilson), and Marcquis Johnson Broughton (Rochester/Edison) finished in 1:35.20.
Larkin also recorded a 3rd place finish in the triple jump (12.8 m) while his teammate Austin Ridley (Trumansburg) was 5th in the same event (11.5 m). Robert Howard (Syracuse/Nottingham) was 4th in the shot put (13.55 m) and Rony St. Simon (Farmingdale) was 5th in the 500 (1:11.31).
The women's 4 x 200 relay team of Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson), Briana Dorsey (Rochester/School of the Arts) Megan Votava (Alfred Almond), and Caitlyn Hotchkiss (Springville) finished 4th overall in 1:54.58.
Dorsey was 4th in the 500 (1:23.99) and Murphy was 7th in the 400 (1:02.19).
Wrestling: 4-5
The wrestling team fell in their final two dual matches of the season, 38-15 to Mercyhurst North East and 47-6 to Niagara CCC. The Pioneers now shift their focus to Sunday's Northeast District/Region III Championships at Jamestown CC.
Versus Mercyhurst North East, Justin Hunt (Ripley) got the blue & gold on the board with a 6-0 decision over Aaron Lett at 141 lbs. At 149, #4 ranked Tyler Peet (Unadilla Valley) matched up with #3 ranked Vincent DiGravio. DiGravio led 4-0 midway through the third period when Peet was able to make an impressive move that led to a pin with just 34 seconds remaining in the match. With the win, Peet improves to 12-2 on the year.
