Past Week Results:

Cross Country: Men 2nd at Region III Championships

The Alfred State College men's cross country team finished second out of seven teams at the Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi on Saturday.  The women's team was incomplete after the flu-bug kept two Lady Pioneers from starting the race.

John Sweeney (Barker) led the way for the blue & gold with a 4th place finish.  He ran the 8k course in 29:12.  He was followed in by Brandon Lewis (Red Creek) finished 5th (29:22).  Derek Snyder (Bath) finished 11th (29:50), Joe Seitz (Williamsville North) finished 18th (30:32), Alex Farrell (N. Tonawanda) was 19th (30:32).

SUNY Delhi won the regional title with 19 points followed by ASC's 55.  The second place finish was the best finish by a men's team since 2002.  Mohawk Valley CC finished 3rd (82), Erie CC was 4th (104), Broome CC (135), Finger Lakes CC (152), and Herkimer CCC (208).  ASC had entered the race ranked #3 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll.  Delhi came in ranked #1 and Mohawk Valley CC was #2.

The ASC women's team had just four runners compete in the 5k course.  Abby Benton (Frewsburg) was the top finisher.  She finished 10th (22:27).  Laura Babcock (Wellsville) was 19th (23:17), Bridget McMahon (Avoca) was 21st (23:28), and Allynne O'Hearn (Pelham, NH) finished 29th (24:54).

Football: 3-5 (0-4 NFC)

Trailing 35-7 with fewer than eleven minutes remaining Alfred State College put forth a valiant comeback but was unable to make it all the way back and fell 35-27 to Dean College.

Alfred State and Dean traded touchdown drives early in the second quarter but the Bulldogs would erase a 7-6 deficit by scoring the next 29 points.

With the score 35-7, ASC started a furious comeback.  Sir Aaron Taylor (Lincoln Hall) rushed in from two-yards out with 8:48 remaining in the contest to make it 35-14.  It was Taylor's second rushing score of the game.  He had run in from 19-yards in the second quarter.

Taylor connected with Pat White (Warren, OH) on a 23-yard scoring play with 5:12 remaining to make it 35-20 and connected with Rod Streater (Burlington, NJ) on a 11-yard touchdown pass with 38 seconds to close the cap to one score.

ASC tried an on-side kick but Dean recovered and ran out the rest of the clock.

Taylor finished 7 for 26 for 164 yards and two scores in his first collegiate start at quarterback.  He also rushed for 79 yards and two scores on 23 carries.  White finished with 68 yards receiving on two catches while Streater had three catches for 56 yards.

Wendell Williamson (New Haven, CT) led the Pioneers with nine tackles while Obi Ezemma (Ramapo) and Robert Edmonds (Washington, DC) each had seven tackles.  Dmeetri Wilson (Monroe) and Rod White (Baltimore, MD) each picked off first quarter passes.

Men's Soccer: 8-6-1, 7-5-1 Region III Division III

Kevin Arilotta (Churchville) found Masanari Yamamoto (Tokyo, Japan) with a nice crossing pass with 4:29 remaining in the first overtime to lift the Alfred State College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Jefferson CC in a Region III Division III Tournament first round contest on Saturday.

The #8 seeded Pioneers and #9 seeded Cannoneers traded opportunities throughout regulation with both goalies making game-saving stops.

On the winning play, Arilotta took the ball to the far corner of the box and sent a cross that found the head of Yamamoto who was able to sneak it in the net.

ASC held a 15 to 6 shot advantage.  Dan Krajcir (Gloversville) made four saves in net for ASC while Brandon Davis made ten saves for JCC.

Earlier in the week in the regular season finale, ASC fell 3-1 to Tompkins Cortland CC.  Steven Hickey (Aquinas) got the blue & gold on the board first with 17:47 remaining in the first half when he found the back of the net after getting a pass from Erik Reynolds (East Rochester) but the Panthers scored three unanswered.  TC3 held a 14-9 shot advantage.  Krajcir made eight saves for ASC.

Women's Soccer: 10-2-4, 9-2-3 Region III Division III, #9 in NJCAA DIII poll

In a back and forth soccer match at Pioneer Stadium, Genesee CC advanced to the Region III Division III Pool A finals with a 7-6 penalty kick victory over Alfred State College.  ASC and GCC both scored twice in the first half but neither team could find the back of the net in the second half or either of the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Genesee got on the board first with 37:57 remaining in the first half when Chelsea Williams found the back of the net.  Ginette Cornett (Potsdam) answered for the Lady Pioneers seven minutes late after getting a pass from Makenzie Finnemore (Genesee Valley).  With 20:02 remaining in the half, Jessie Smith (Fredonia) found Shawna McNeil (Hornell) who scored to put the Lady Pioneers in the lead.  GCC's Particia Capwell capitalized on an opportunity following a corner kick in the final minute of the half (49 seconds) to tie the game.

Genesee controlled the play of most of the second half and limited ASC to just one shot.  In the overtime periods the Lady Pioneers got the offense clicking and had more scoring opportunities but couldn't put one past Leslie George.

In the penalty kicks ASC jumped to a 3-2 lead and had three different opportunities to win the match but were unable to get the winner.  In the 10th round, Kelsey Traxler scored and Alfred's attempt shot rang off the top crossbar and out of the net to seal the victory for GCC.

Smith, Shelby Winchester (Maple Grove), Audrey Rath (Medina), Morgan Scholla (Genesee Valley), Emma Pollok (Fredonia), and Kassandra Durant (Ilion) scored for Alfred State in the shutout.

Parks finished with eight saves in net for the Lady Pioneers.
