Lady Spikers ranked #7

The Alfred State College volleyball team is ranked #7 in the first regular season NJCAA Division III poll.  The Lady Pioneers are currently 6-0 on the year.

The Pioneers opened up the season in convincing style by winning all ten games en route to a perfect 5-0 record at the Mohawk Valley CC Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers then downed Erie CC on Tuesday evening 3-0 in their Western New York Athletic Conference opener.

The Lady Pioneers are coming off a 2006 season in which they finished 32-3 and were ranked as high as #5 in the national poll.

A-State sweeps Erie

The Alfred State College volleyball team remained perfect with a three game sweep of Erie CC in their Western New York Athletic Conference opener.  The Pioneers won 30-10, 30-20, and 30-26 to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Jeni Jerome (Westhill) and Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) each finished with eight kills.  Shannon Jablonski (Cheektowaga) added six kills and four service aces while Natalie Gregory (Iroquois) finished with five kills and four aces.  Elaina Braun (Waterloo) passed out 27 assists.

TCCC downs Alfred State

Danielle Hiza scored three goals and registered an assist as the Tompkins Cortland CC women's soccer team downed Alfred State 6-1 in the rain on Tuesday afternoon.  TCCC improves to 4-1 while ASC falls to 1-2-1

TCCC out-shot Alfred 9 to 3 in the 1st half and built a 4-0 lead.  Hiza's second goal made it 5-0 before Holly Fitzpatrick (Hornell) scored after getting a pass from Callie Ayers (Letchworth).  Hiza 3rd goal capped the scoring.

Volleyball player Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) and football player Grant Tamme (Danville, KY) have been named the Alfred State College athletes of the week.

Corbin named Special Teams Player of the Week

Corbin returned a punt 46 yards in the 1st quarter to give the Pioneers a 14-0 lead en route to a 56-14 victory over the JV squad from SUNY Brockport. Corbin also caught three passes for 109 yards and another touchdown. He caught a 62-yard pass from Grant Tamme (Danville, KY) in the 2nd quarter.

Big Plays Spark Pioneers to Victory

The Alfred State College football used the big play to down Brockport JV 56-14 on Monday afternoon.  The Pioneers scored four times on plays longer than 40 yards and forced five Golden Eagle turnovers.  With the win the Blue and Gold even up their record at 1-1.

The Pioneers scored 21 points in the 1st quarter before Brockport got on the board with a rushing touchdown on the first play of the 2nd quarter.  The Blue and Gold answered with four straight TD's to head into halftime with a 49-7 lead.  Both teams traded scores in the 3rd quarter.

Lady Pioneers fall at FLCC

The Alfred State College women's soccer team ran out of gas on Sunday versus Finger Lakes CC.  The Lady Lakers scored the game's first six goals en route to an 8-2 victory.  ASC was playing their 3rd game in four days and falls to 1-1-1 on the season.

Renee Smith paced the Laker offensive attack with two goals and two assists.  FLCC broke open a scoreless game with three goals in the final 5:21 of the 1st half.

Brittany Hannah (Eastridge) and Jody Ninos (Alfred Almond) picked up goals in the second half for the Lady Pioneers.

Pios Split with Penn Tech

The Alfred State College baseball team split a non-league doubleheader at Penn Tech in Williamsport on Sunday afternoon.  The Blue and Gold fell 3-2 in the opener and won the nightcap 3-1.  ASC is now 3-1 on the year.

The Alfred State College opened up their campaign by winning the Mohawk Valley CC Tournament for the second year in a row.  The Lady Pioneers were a perfect 5-0 on the day.

In pool play the Blue and Gold downed Adirondack CC, 30-14 & 30-16, Fulton Montgomery CC, 30-15 & 30-20, and SUNY Cobleskill, 30-21 & 30-15.  In the semifinals, ASC downed Herkimer CCC, 30-20 & 30-9 to advance to the finals where they knocked off the host Mohawk Valley CC, 30-22 & 30-23.

Pios Sweep Fall Opener

The Alfred State College baseball team opened up their fall campaign with a sweep of WNYAC rival Mercyhurst North East.  The Pioneers won the opener 10-5 and the nightcap 6-5 in eight innings.

Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) and Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) were each 2 for 2 in the opener.  Jeff Paul (Horseheads) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Jeff Miller (N. Tonawanda) was 2 for 3.  Derek Speaker (Starpoint) and Kevin Underhill (Somers) each drove home two runs.  The Pioneers used a seven run 4th inning to take control of the game.
