Caroline Baker, class of '07
Caroline M. Baker, RHIT, a 2007 graduate of Alfred State College's health information technology/medical records program, has found career nirvana at Duke University Hospital (Durham, NC) where she serves as HIM manager. In this capacity, Caroline plans, develops, and manages the daily activities and workload for the coding unit comprised of 28 staff members, most who telecommute. Because Duke has recently implemented a completely electronic medical record system, the rest of Caroline's staff will be able to telecommute in early 2009.
Additionally, she serves as liaison and resource to other departments within the hospital to assist and resolve issues concerning coding for billing, research, and statistical purposes.
Caroline says, "I chose this program at Alfred State because I have worked in medical records in some capacity my entire career. I started out as a per diem medical secretary, became a self-taught medical transcriptionist, then got the position at Dr. Rosner's, and the rest is history! I literally started at the very, very bottom. I chose Alfred because a coworker at Samaritan Hospital was also attending and recommended the program.
"Alfred State College provided me with thorough education and training in health information technology. The availability of an online HIT program along with Alfred State's reputation in this field was instrumental in my decision to return to college. My dedication to being a successful student coupled with the high expectations and teaching standards of my adviser and instructors at Alfred State prepared me well for the success I have achieved in my career. Becoming part of the management team at Duke is the career opportunity of a lifetime!"
Prior to relocating to North Carolina, this ASC honor graduate had begun studying at the University of Cincinnati to obtain a bachelor's degree in health information management, a pursuit she plans to resume in 2009.
Prior to joining the staff at Duke, Caroline served as director of health information services/medical staff coordinator, EJ Noble Hospital, Gouverneur (2007-08); transcription supervisor, Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown (2003-07); and medical office assistant, David F. Rosner, MD, Carthage (1992-03).
She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa; AHIMA (2003-); HIMANNY (Health Information Management Association of Northern NY (2007), serving as delegate at annual conference in 2008; NYSAMSS (New York State Association Medical Staff Services (2007-); and AUSA (Association of the United States Army (2007-).
The Harrisville (NY) Central School graduate is the mother of Shad 25, Carrie 23, and Darren 20. Caroline enjoys ballroom dancing, cooking, health/fitness/walking, and traveling.
