Frey Named All-American

Alfred State College baseball player JP Frey (Erie, PA/McDowell) has been named a NJCAA Division III 3rd team All-American.  Frey is the sixth baseball All-American since the baseball program was reinstated in 1994.

Frey led the Pioneers with a .379 (36 for 95) batting average.  He collected eight doubles, two triples, one homer, and 15 RBI.  He also scored a team high 30 runs and stole a team high 16 bases.  He started in all 28 games.

The All-American honors cap a well decorated season for the Pioneer who spent time at 2B, SS, and in the OF.  Earlier this spring he was named 1st team All-Region and the Alfred State College Senior Athlete of the Year.

For his two-year career he started in all 93 games, hit .381 with 46 RBI and 42 stolen bases.  He has been named All-WNYAC twice, All-Region twice, and was the 2010 ASC freshman athlete of the year.

Jose Sanchez was the last Pioneer to be named baseball All-American in 2007.

ASC President Responds to Governor's Proposal

In response to NYS Gov. Andrew Cuomo's bill to implement the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program, Alfred State College President Dr. John M. Anderson issued the following statement:

"I commend Governor Cuomo for supporting a rational tuition plan,” said Anderson. “Predictability and planning are essential when families budget for a college education. The plan will support the SUNY goals of access, affordability, and completion. The Alfred State College community is grateful to Governor Cuomo for recognizing the needs of SUNY’s students; supporting a rational tuition plan allows SUNY to continue to provide high quality education at an affordable price."

NYSUNY 2020 Act includes a "Rational Tuition Plus Plan" that will enhance the academic mission of SUNY, while maintaining affordability and lead to statewide economic development.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today introduced legislation to implement the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program - a joint program between the Governor and State University of New York (SUNY) - that will incentivize bottom-up, individualized long-term economic development plans on SUNY campuses and the surrounding communities. The NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program will enhance SUNY's academic mission while maintaining affordability and placing college campuses across New York at the center of the state's regionally-based economic revitalization strategy.

The bill includes the authority for Empire State Development to issue $80 million in capital funding under the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program.

The bill authorizes all SUNY campuses to implement a rational tuition plan that gives them the ability to raise tuition up to five percent annually for five years. In addition, as a component of the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program, it allows the four University Centers in Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook to implement a "Rational Plus Plan" which allows an additional three percent tuition increase, subject to the approval of the University Centers' application under NYSUNY 2020 by the Governor and SUNY Chancellor.

The increases will help build these institutions into regional economic development generators and world-class centers of research and innovation. Increases will also allow schools to add more faculty, educate additional students, increase class offerings and improve graduation rates. The plan also allows students and parents to better plan for college expenses, and places SUNY at the center of New York's economic revitalization.

In order to ensure affordability to students and families this legislation would help students and families with the cost increases. Students who are eligible for the maximum Tuition Assistance Program ("TAP") award will not be subject to a tuition increase under the five year rational tuition plan. Moreover, the SUNY Board of Trustees will be required to create a revolving loan fund to provide low interest loans to students. Finally, as a condition of approval under the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program the University Centers are required to include other financial aid plans to qualify for the "Rational Plus" program.

"The current tuition system does not serve our students, schools, or state," Governor Cuomo said. "This bill brings rationality to the SUNY tuition system, by allowing students and parents to reasonably plan for college expenses, instead of being subject to dramatic tuition increases and uncertainty. By offering $140 million in new capital funding to our state's leading universities, we are building these schools into America's leading institutions of research and innovation, while also creating jobs for New Yorkers and improving our state's economic competitiveness."

SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher said, "Governor Cuomo is fulfilling the promise he made to New Yorkers in his State of the State address by submitting legislation that positions SUNY to be a key driver of our state's economic recovery. Furthermore, rational tuition will allow SUNY to flourish while protecting access for New Yorkers and providing students with the resources they need to complete their degrees on time. Governor Cuomo is proving himself to be a staunch advocate and supporter of public higher education."

Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams said, "This legislation is important news for economic development in New York State. SUNY institutions play a critical in their local economies. This initiative will strengthen the connections between cutting-edge SUNY research, local business development and job creation. In addition, establishing a rational tuition policy for SUNY will enhance the universities' roles as economic drivers in their local communities and throughout the state.

SUNY Student Assembly President Kaitlyn Beachner said, "Governor Cuomo's decision to introduce legislation that creates a rational tuition plan shows his dedication to respecting the voice of SUNY students. For the past three years the SUNY Student Assembly has been asking for Albany's support to bring an end to the politicization of SUNY tuition, which places an undue burden on students and their families around the state. We applaud the Governor's effort to end the harsh tuition spikes that have been detrimental to SUNY's accessibility. By having the SUNY Board of Trustee's establish a revolving loan fund at a low interest rate and ensuring the protection of those students who fully depend on the Tuition Assistance Program, the accessibility for all students remains intact despite potential tuition increases. I look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature towards the enactment of a final tuition plan that will benefit all students in the State University of New York. I am delighted that the students of SUNY have found a new partner in Governor Andrew Cuomo.

New York State Building and Construction Trades Council President Ed Malloy said, "On behalf of New York's 220,000 unionized construction workers, the NYS Building & Construction Trades Council is excited to learn about the Governor's NYSUNY 2020 program that has the potential to create thousands of jobs – great news for our industry which is experiencing unemployment rates between 20-60 percent across the state. Over the last 18 months, the Building Trades have worked hard with SUNY over to ensure that labor protections and good-paying jobs for New Yorkers are part of this effort, and are proud to be a part of it."

Currently, the 20 year average annual SUNY tuition increase is 6.7 percent, well above that proposed in the rational tuition plan. Under the existing system, there are periods without tuition increases followed by sudden and dramatic spikes in tuition of upwards of 40 percent. Such spikes and uncertainty in tuition is detrimental to students, families, and the university system.

Provisions in the legislation include:

  • Authorizing all SUNY campuses to implement a rational tuition plan by increasing tuition five percent annually for five years
  • Authorizing University Centers to implement a rational plus tuition plan by including an additional three percent increase annually for five years conditioned on the approval of their NYSUNY 2020 applications by the Governor and SUNY Chancellor
  • Requiring that any tuition increase under the five year rational tuition does not apply to students eligible for maximum TAP award
  • Creating a State University Low Interest Revolving Loan Fund
  • Requiring conflict of interest policies for implementation of NYSUNY Challenge Grant Program
  • Authorizing the Empire State Development Corporation to issue $80 million in bond proceeds to implement NY-SUNY Challenge Grant Program

ASC Students Chosen for Internship with LeChase Construction

Two Alfred State College (ASC) construction management engineering technology students, Zachary Towner, Hamlin, and Andrew Meeder, Dale, have been chosen by LeChase Construction, LLC, Rochester, to work with the company on construction management for the campus student leadership center which is currently under construction.

For the duration of the project, Towner and Meeder will

  • become familiar with all construction documents (drawings, specifications);
  • become familiar with Change Management System;
  • help develop, coordinate, and implement value engineering concepts;
  • assist with weekly progress project management and superintendent meetings;
  • review the approved door/frame/hardware schedules for accuracy;
  • observe site housekeeping and maintenance, as well as tour the site and comment;
  • post drawings, addenda, CAD drawings;
  • become familiar with the CM responsibilities for encouraging the contractor safety program, make observations, and report to CM;
  • provide special sketches of field conditions, for clarification to send to the consultants, attaching photos, sketches, partial copies from design documents or other information that will clarify the communication;
  • provide input to LeChase of any new methods as CM based on their college training, suggesting "new" or "improved" techniques that may be implemented by LeChase on the SLC project;
  • Phase 2: participate with the campus, NYS Construction Fund, architect, CM and consultants on Phase 2 project meetings, reviews, comments, etc.;
  • photograph documentation of the construction site, label photos to meet Fund protocol, and transfer photos to the Fund representative on a weekly basis;
  • Intangibles: that is, miscellaneous items as they arise, field measurements, clean trailer, shovel snow, create sketches, field phone calls;
  • assist the superintendent in creating a staging and logistics plan for Phase 2; and
  • help administer the CM's Web page whereby project documents are shared.

The selection process for the internship was conducted like a typical job search. In order to be considered, sophomore and junior students were required to submit resumes which were reviewed by Andy Smilinich, ASC director of capital projects; Jeff Marshall, associate professor and chair, ASC Civil Engineering Technology Department; and Erin Vitale, associate professor, ASC Civil Engineering Technology Department. Twenty-six students enrolled in construction management classes submitted resumes.

The top 11 candidates of the 26 were chosen for formal interviews conducted by Jim Higgins, project manager for LeChase Construction Services, LLC, and Smilinich. The two students selected for the available positions are both sophomores. Towner and Meeder began work at semester’s end.

The interns will work full time throughout the summer and the equivalent of two or three days a week during the semester.

Towner and Meeder proved they were the right men for the job recently, when they provided information to Higgins regarding a discrepancy they thought they had found in some documentation. After further review with the architect, they were found to be correct and the architect issued a clarification.

“They were completing an assignment given to them, then, voiced their concern appropriately. Both interns have been prompt, professional, and thorough in their assignments. They have accepted and completed each assignment without error,” says Higgins of the two.

Arroyo Named New Alfred State Athletic Director

Daryl ArroyoAlfred State College Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Steve Tyrell has announced that Dr. Daryl Arroyo has been named the new Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Recreation and Intramurals.  Arroyo, who succeeds Kathy Feldman, begins his new duties at Alfred State on June 29. 

Arroyo comes to Alfred State after working at Springfield College (Springfield, MA) for the past 21 years.  He chaired the Department of Physical Education and Health Education at Springfield since 2008 and coached the college’s wrestling team since 1990. 

Dr. Steve Tyrell is pleased to add Arroyo to his staff.  “We are excited that Dr. Arroyo will be joining Alfred State and will be leading our College's strategic initiatives related to NCAA, advancing summer camp programs and broadening the recreational and intramural opportunities for students in the future. Dr. Arroyo joins a department of dedicated athletic and physical education professionals and I believe they collectively will be very successful in accomplishing these strategic initiatives for the College."

As chair of the department at Springfield, Arroyo oversaw the largest academic department at the institution.  The department consisted of 34 full-time faculty and over 400 graduate and undergraduate students.

In his coaching career on the mats, Arroyo accumulated a 302-167-6 record, coached 70 national qualifiers, 27 NCAA All-Americans, 67 Scholar All-Americans, and 45 conference champions.  He is a New England Wrestling Association Hall of Fame member and been named NEWA Coach of the Year five times along with being named the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 1991.

Arroyo has a Ph.D. in Sport, Leisure, and Exercise Science with a concentration in Educational Sport Psychology from the University of Connecticut, an M.S. in Physical Education with a concentration in Sport Psychology from California State University – Fullerton, and a B.S. in Health Fitness from Springfield College.

Other past experiences include: assistant business manager at Central Connecticut State University, assistant wrestling coach at Central Connecticut State, and assistant wrestling coach and physical education instructor at California State University – Fullerton.  Arroyo also is the president/director/owner of the Springfield Wrestling School.

Arroyo has served as the Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association President, the treasurer for NEWA, and has been a member of the National Ranking Committee of NCAA Division III.  He is also a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD); the Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MAHPERD); and the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

As a collegiate wrestler, Arroyo was a NCAA Division II All-American with a 6th place finish at the 1984 National Championships.  In 1980 he was a Connecticut High School Wrestling State Champion.

Arroyo’s duties at Alfred State will include overseeing the Pioneers 18 intercollegiate athletic teams and leading the college’s physical education department and intramural/recreation programs.  He will also manage the department’s 13 full-time employees.

Ed Foundation Funds Students Through Work-grant Program

The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., annually funds several Alfred State College students through its work-grant program, allowing students who are ineligible for work-study funds to find employment on campus. The grant is renewable on an annual basis.

Additionally, departments within Alfred State can request student workers with specific skills and the work-grant coordinator attempts to meet those needs with appropriate student help.

Students funded through the Ed Foundation to work in specific areas on campus are considered “regular” employees of the college and are expected to maintain the level of professionalism required of their colleagues.

For award year 2010-11, 17 students from Engineering, Nursing, Instructional Technologies, Communications, Student Records and Financial Services, Student Activities, and English & Humanities earned a total of $9,130.07 from the Work Grant Program.

The program is administered through the Student Records and Financial Services Office.

The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., is a private foundation representing faculty, staff, and friends of Alfred State College dedicated to improving the ASC community through the support of educational programs. The activities pursued by the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., are governed by a board of directors made up of representatives from each of the following groups: alumni, College Council, faculty and staff, and friends of the college.

The Foundation provides monetary support to enhance learning opportunities for students through scholarships, work grants, and community service projects. The Ed Foundation also funds the Building Trades programs’ hands-on home construction projects.

Additionally, the Foundation owns and maintains the School of Applied Technology campus in Wellsville. The 22-acre parcel consists of more than 20 buildings with some 800 students enrolled in 19 programs. The programs, which stress “learning by doing,” incorporate traditional classroom experience with comprehensive “on-the-job” laboratory experiences. Since 1996, the Foundation has invested over $2.3 million in improvements on the campus.
