The Alfred State College athletic program had strong showings in both the Region III Director's Cup and the NATYCAA (National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators). The Pioneers finished 3rd in the Directors Cup and 7th in the scholarship division of the NATYCAA Cup.
The Directors Cup is a competition to determine the top overall athletic department out of 26 schools that compete in Region III. Points are given based on the performance of each sport offered by the college and an average is determined based on the number of sports the college offers. Alfred State accumulated 858 totals points good for an average of 47.67 per sport. The Pioneers finished 3rd behind Monroe CC and Mohawk Valley CC.
The NATYCAA Cup is a national competition between all two-year athletic departments. Points are given to athletic departments based on performance at National Championship competition. The men's athletic programs accumulated 5.5 points while the women scored 47 for a total of 102.5. Iowa Central CC won the title with 158.5 points.
In 2008-09, the Alfred State volleyball team and men's indoor track and field team won Region III Championships while the men's and women's soccer, men's swimming, and men's outdoor track and field team finished as Region III runner-ups.
In the national rankings, the men's and women's cross country team, the lacrosse team, the men's and women's soccer team, the men's and women's outdoor track and field team, and the volleyball team all finished in the NJCAA top ten.
In total, Alfred State finished 2008-09 with 151 victories and a .594 winning percentage. The department had 15 athletes earn NJCAA All-American honors, 12 named NJCAA Academic All-Americans, 49 named All-Region, and 42 named All-Conference.
