The Physical and Health Sciences Department is housed in the Allied Health Building centrally located on campus. In addition to the traditional lecture halls outfitted with multimedia technology, the department offers students many other learning environments depending on course selection and program of study.
There are nine science laboratories with individual capacities of 18 students outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and computer assisted instrumentation to simulate real world settings in all aspects of chemistry and biology. This equipment and instrumentation ranges from digital balances, distillation apparatus, incubators and stereo microscopes to gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers, capillary electrophoresis, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometers, and digital fingerprint scanner.
For nursing, there are two campus skills labs and a medication lab which provide practice environments and have equipment to foster basic and advanced health care skills. Simulation mannequins, models for intubation and injection and supplies for dressing changes and irrigations are available. IV pumps, needleless medication systems, central venous access models and IV arms allow practice for competency. There is an integrated technology in the form of computer-assisted instruction, computer charting and iPod-based drug reference database.
Most of the department’s programs utilize some form of a “virtual facility” via Blackboard, Alfred’s learning management system delivering online coursework, lectures, laboratories, recitations, and internships without four walls. Students enrolled in these programs utilizing this technology need to have access to appropriate computer technology to support this option. Currently this is PC based with Windows XP and Vista operating systems. The College has a number of computer labs manned with proctors. Personal computers can be configured to gain access to Blackboard via a wired or wireless option.
Some programs in the department have a requirement to complete an off-campus, in-facility experience. This provides students the exposure to a true workplace setting. Off-campus experiences may be directly proctored by faculty or in-facility staff. These opportunities are arranged by the department and may require personal transportation and living arrangements.
