Building Construction - Student Required Tool List

The following is a tool list for all building construction students. We do not endorse any vendor. We do suggest that you buy good American-made tools which are accurate and dependable to last your lifetime. It is recommended that these tools be insured under the parents' or the student's homeowners' insurance.

First Semester

  • Safety glasses with side shields Z87
  • 16' - 30' push pull tape
  • Brick spacing rule
  • 100' tape
  • 20 oz. framing hammer
  • 8 point handsaw
  • 4' Level Starrett MPH 48, Stanley Fat Max, Stanley Fat Max Extreme, Stabila 196-2 or equivalent
  • Screwdrivers - basic set - Phillips & regular
  • 6" Stanley low angle fully adjustable block plane
  • Set of 4 chisels: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" and 1"
  • 9 - 11" brick trowel forged - No Kobalt Brand
  • Nail apron
  • 100' braided nylon mason's line
  • 100' chalk box
  • Mason's line blocks
  • Utility knife and blades
  • Cat's paw
  • 13-piece set of drill bits with index - 1/16"-1/4" HS
  • 2", 4", 6", 8" and 12" taping knives
  • Brick hammer 18-24 oz. - No Kobalt Brand
  • 3-1/2" brick chisel
  • Framing square (with rafter tables)
  • 2' wrecking bar or wonder bar
  • 12-oz. or heavier plumb bob
  • Jointer - Masonry 1/2" X 5/8" Marshallton, Rose Bon, Kraft or equivalent - No Kobalt Brand
  • Inexpensive Plastic Parka (cold weather)
  • 8" adjustable end wrench
  • Speed square
  • Aviation snips
  • Keyhole saw
  • 16" magnesium concrete float
  • 10" - 12" concrete finishing trowel
  • Steel concrete edger
  • Rubber boots
  • Combination square - 12"
  • Mud pan or plasterer's hawk
  • Drywall rasp
  • Circular saw 7 1/4" with combination blade
  • 3/8" electric or cordless drill (variable speed reversing suggested)
  • Sheet finishing sander - vibrating with sand paper in assorted grits or Random orbital sander and paper
  • Extension cord - grounding type - 50' minimum
  • 2 padlocks (key or combination)
  • YELLOW hard hat - type AB
  • Rain slicker
  • Work gloves
  • Dust masks - 3M - Model 8210, for insulation
  • Two (2) sets Khaki pants are required
  • Work boots
  • Ear protection (plugs or muffs)
  • Hacksaw

  • Architect ruler (English)
  • Stanley 24 gal. pro-mobile job chest (or equivalent)

Students will be informed at the beginning of each semester as to what textbooks will be required for instruction during that semester.

Second Semester

In addition to the first semester tools, the following are needed:

  • Sliding T-bevel, 8"
  • 1 pair stair gauges
  • Compass Scriber (for carpentry)
  • 16 oz. hammer
  • Coping saw
  • Counter sink bit for screws
  • 10-point hand saw - 20"
  • Nail sets - set of four

Third Semester

In addition to the requirements of first two semesters, the following items are needed:

  • Spade bit set (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1")
  • 2 1/8" hole saw
  • Memory stick
  • Knee pads
  • Putty knife
  • 2" paint brush (trim or sash brush)

The student will be responsible for the care and safeguarding of his/her and the college's tools and equipment.
