Global Studies Minor

The global studies minor is intended to provide an opportunity for students in any Alfred State bachelor's major to add a serious international dimension to their college educational experience. Requiring a minimum of 18 credits, this interdisciplinary minor is intended to go beyond simple exposure to international perspectives. Students must meet a 2- semester foreign language requirement (or demonstrated equivalent competency) and participate in an approved study abroad or study away program, international internship, or faculty-led international learning experience.

The minor is comprised of existing courses. Students will have considerable flexibility in building the minor, choosing from a growing list of electives to fulfill program requirements. At present, the only courses common to all students in the minor is ANTH 1013 (Cultural Anthropology). Students may choose any foreign language and may choose from an extensive list of study abroad/study-away/project-based learning opportunities. To be approved as part of the minor, these learning opportunities must have clear expected learning outcomes and be approved in advance by a faculty advisor.

A student may declare this minor at any time after completing 24 credit hours of coursework with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. To be awarded the minor, all program requirements must be completed with an overall GPA of 2.5 in all minor-related courses taken at Alfred State. At least 12 of the 18 credit hours for the minor must have been completed at Alfred State and at least twelve of the credit hours of the minor must consist of courses not required by the student's major.
